The Lone Star State ranked near the bottom in a new national study of the safest states to live in.

A WalletHub analysis released this week placed Texas at No. 48 overall, ahead of only Mississippi and Louisiana. The study compared all 50 states across 52 safety indicators, including crime rates, financial security, workplace safety, road safety, and emergency preparedness.

Texas and safety concerns

According to WalletHub’s report, Texas struggles in several categories, including the share of uninsured residents, natural disaster risks, and traffic safety. While not every community faces the same challenges, the state’s low ranking highlights broader issues that impact families raising children here.

The Top 10 Safest States

The safest states, according to WalletHub, tend to combine strong healthcare coverage, low crime, and preparedness for emergencies. The Top 10 are:

  1. Vermont
  2. Massachusetts
  3. New Hampshire
  4. Maine
  5. Utah
  6. Connecticut
  7. Hawaii
  8. Minnesota
  9. Rhode Island
  10. Wyoming

The 10 least safe states

At the other end of the list are states with higher crime rates, lower financial security, or weaker emergency planning. The Bottom 10 include:

  1. Missouri
  2. Georgia
  3. Alabama
  4. Colorado
  5. Oklahoma
  6. Arkansas
  7. Florida
  8. Texas
  9. Mississippi
  10. Louisiana

The WalletHub study suggests that Texas faces uphill challenges when it comes to safety. WalletHub notes that its analysis is designed to give residents, lawmakers, and community leaders a broad look at safety factors that matter most for families.
