These are some of the best family-friendly campsites near Houston

If you’re in Texas and looking to escape the hustle of Houston and immerse your family in nature, camping could be the perfect opportunity. Camping with your Dad is a timeless Texas tradition that many cherish from childhood. From exploring the great outdoors to cooking together and sharing stories around a Texas campfire, camping offers a memorable way for dads to bond with their kids right here in the Lone Star State.

There are tons of campsites in Texas, and there are some particularly cool ones within a 2-3 hour drive from Houston. Camping in Texas provides the chance to swim, play, and explore in some of the natural gems throughout the state. From putting up tents in national forests to glamping in coastal campsites, there’s truly something for everyone.

Check out these four campsites near Houston that are recommended for families: 

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area

About: Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area is in the Davy Crockett National Forest and was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. There are 20 miles of hiking trails to explore, a large lake for swimming and fishing, and an opportunity for RV and tent camping. There is a playground for kids, too and the tall pine trees surrounding the area make the climate cooler and pleasant for summer camping. 

Location and pricing: A little over 2 hours outside of Houston, Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area is located at 18551 SH-7 in Kennard. Campsites range from $15-$35 and can be booked online here. The park is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Brazos Bend State Park

About: Brazos Bend State Park is a great place to camp for families with kids interested in wildlife. In particular, kids fascinated by alligators will have the time of their lives here. From a safe distance, you can watch the gators come out of the ponds and streams, or see them swimming through the water. Brazos Bend has campsites available, as well as shelters and cabins. Most of the sites have access to bathrooms and showers. 

Location and pricing: Brazos Bend State Park is just an hour outside of Houston, located at 21901 Farm to Market Rd 762, Needville. The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. Campsites range from $12 to $25 per night and there is a $7 entrance fee per person, per night. Children under 13 are free. You can make a reservation online here

Lake Livingston State Park

About: Known for fishing, Lake Livingston is a wonderful place to have great catches with your kids. The park is beautiful and many enjoy swimming and taking part in water activities such as boating or paddling. There are tons of opportunities within the park as well, such as archery, mountain biking trails, tours, and hiking. There is a playground for kids and nice bathrooms with hot showers. Campers can choose from tent sites with water and electricity, sites with no hookups, RV sites, or even cabin rentals for extra luxury. 

Location and pricing: Just a little over an hour outside Houston, Lake Livingston State Park is located at 300 Park Road 65 Livingston and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Campsite rates range from $14 to $30 and a per person entrance fee of $6, not including children under 13. You can book your spot here

Galveston Island State Park

About: Galveston Island State Park is just an hour away from Houston. This coastal campsite is a fantastic place for families to stay, offering campsites and cabins. The cabins are more like glamping, with furniture, AC, and kitchens. There are two types of campsites, bay and beach sites. All of the bay sites have water but only some come with electricity and there are restrooms/showers nearby. Beach sites all have water and electricity and access to nearby bathrooms. No matter how you camp, be sure to take the opportunity to swim, kayak, canoe, or paddleboard in the beautiful waters. 

Location and pricing: Galveston Island State Park is located at 14901 FM3005, Galveston and is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. The campsites range from $15 to $25 and $200 to $250 for cabins. The park also charges a $5 entrance fee per person, per night. Children under 13 are free. Reservations can be made online
