Need a new trash can fast? Here’s how Houston’s Can Blitz works

Trash cans

Can Blitz is a newly launched service from the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department. It allows residents to quickly pick up new or replacement trash carts (“black bins”) directly, instead of waiting for often lengthy scheduled delivery.

Why did Houston launch Can Blitz?

Mayor John Whitmire highlighted a surge in requests—especially from new subdivisions and households needing replacements—totaling thousands of recent service requests. Can Blitz responds by streamlining access to bins through in-person pick-up locations.

When and where can you use it?

Start Date:

  • It launched Friday, September 5, 2025

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday–Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

  • 2nd & 4th Saturdays each month: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Pickup Locations (spread across the city):

  • North SWMD Service Center: 5711 Eastex Freeway Feeder Rd

  • Southeast SWMD Service Center: 1506 Central St., Houston, TX 77012

  • South Environmental Service Center: 11500 S. Post Oak Rd., Houston, TX 77035

What do residents need to bring?

To receive a new or replacement trash cart, be sure to bring:

  1. A copy of your current water bill (for address verification)

  2. Your 311 Service Request (SR) number

  3. If replacing a can, your damaged cart must be brought back

Who should consider using Can Blitz?

  • New homeowners or residents needing their first city-issued trash cart

  • Families with damaged or missing carts who can’t wait for regular delivery

What if I can’t pick it up in person?

If you’re unable to pick up a cart yourself, delivery through the standard 311 request process remains available—though delivery times may take longer,
