Dads, you want to be involved in your child’s life, but busy schedules can make it tough. Here’s where the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) program comes in.
It’s a great way to make a real difference at your child’s school and spend quality time with them, all while providing a positive influence on other students.
What is Watch D.O.G.S.?
Think of Watch D.O.G.S. as a volunteer program designed specifically for fathers and father figures. It allows you to spend a dedicated day or even a few hours at your child’s school, volunteering your time and being a positive presence.
Why Should You Get Involved?
There are many reasons to become a Watch D.O.G.S. dad, starting with being a positive role model. Your presence sends a strong message to students about the importance of fatherly involvement but will also help enhance school safety by helping decrease bullying and adding an extra set of eyes for those who may be in need.
The kids in school aren’t the only ones who need the help, but the Watch D.O.G.S. can lend a hand to teachers and staff, helping to monitor hallways, lunch and recess, and classrooms so that he educators can stay focused on teaching and educating as much as possible.
The program is a great way not just to bond with your child but see their school environment firsthand and connect with them in a new way. In the meantime, you may meet other dads who share your commitment to their kids’ education.
How to Get Started
Getting involved is easy. Contact your child’s school as most schools with a Watch D.O.G.S. program will have a program coordinator or a designated point person. Many Houston-area schools have programs set up already.
Reach out and express your interest. From there, you may be asked to attend an informational session that will explain the program in detail and answer any questions you might have. From there, it’s as easy as signing up either for a full day or a few hours.
Be a Watch D.O.G.S. Dad and make a positive impact on your child’s school, your community, and most importantly, your relationship with your child.
