HTown Dads is here to answer your family’s questions about how things work in Houston through our Ask Htown Dads! series.
This week’s question: “When do they decide to open the rooftops at Daikin Park and NRG Stadium, and how does that work?”
At Daikin Park, where the Astros play, the roof decision is all about the weather. If it’s a nice day (think cooler temps and low humidity), the roof is likely to be open so fans can enjoy the fresh air. But if it’s too hot, humid, or there’s a chance of rain, the roof stays closed to keep everyone comfortable. This is why you’ll see the roof open more in spring than during Houston’s scorching summer.
From 2000 to 2019, the Astros kept the roof at Daikin Park closed most of the time, opening it for about 18 games per season on average. Lately, they’ve been closing it even more often, especially during the playoffs, like in the 2023 Division Series, to boost crowd noise and create a better home-field advantage.
At NRG Stadium, where the Texans play, the decision is made about two hours before kickoff. It’s a similar deal—they check the weather to see if it’s too hot, rainy, or just not great for football. The goal is to make sure fans and players have the best experience possible.
However, the roof doesn’t get opened very often, mainly because the Texans like to keep it closed to make the crowd noise louder, which can give them an edge during games. On average, they’ve opened the roof less than once a season, though they did open it a couple of times in 2024.
In both cases, it’s all about balancing the excitement of an open-air event with comfort and safety. Houston weather can be unpredictable, so the rooftops adjust accordingly.
