5 things to know about the Houston snowstorm

A major winter storm is headed to Houston and it’s crucial to stay informed and prepared.

Here are the key details you need to know:

1. Storm Timing & Areas Affected

The Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. on Monday to 6 p.m. on Tuesday for portions of south central and southeast Texas.

2. Precipitation Details

Expect heavy mixed precipitation with snow accumulations of 3–5 inches along and south of the I-10 corridor, and 1–3 inches north of it. Light ice accumulations (up to 0.1 inch) are also possible in the southern areas. Heavy bands of snow and sleet may occur from late Monday night to early Tuesday afternoon, with some localized areas potentially experiencing accumulations greater than 5 inches.

3. Hazardous Road Conditions

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to be slick and hazardous. These conditions could impact travel Tuesday morning and evening, as well as Wednesday morning commutes.

4. Cold Weather Advisory & Extreme Cold Watch

A Cold Weather Advisory is active from 9 p.m. on Monday to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, with wind chills possibly dropping to 15°F. An Extreme Cold Watch is in place from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, with wind chills dangerously low at around 10°F

5. Safety Precautions

Delay travel if possible, and if you must be on the road, drive slowly, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and prepare for sudden changes in visibility. Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready, dress in layers (including a hat, face mask, and gloves), and keep pets indoors.
