Need a way to keep your kids entertained for hours but where they’ll actually learn something at the same time? The Children’s Museum of Houston offers a variety of exhibits aimed to engage kids at all ages.
This museum is the only one of its kind in Houston and is built exclusively for kids. Here are five things to know before you make a trip:
1. Here’s three of the most unique things about the museum
This pseudo-city is run entirely by kids, for kids. From shopping, working and spending their hard-earned money, Kidtropolis offers kids a chance to role-play in a world that mirrors our own.
With constantly changing features and over two-dozen job choices, there’s something for even the most ambitious kid.
For the toddlers and infants that aren’t able to participate in Kidtropolis, Tot*Spot was developed specifically for children ages 0-2. With fun activities and experiments in a space designed for parent-child play, Tot*Spot is the perfect place for your infant to develop physically, cognitively and emotionally.
There is also a water-play area called FlowWorks, which is open during seasons with warmer temperatures. This interactive exhibit allows children of all ages to have fun with water using a “hands-in” approach (children have to actually put their hands into the water for the activities to be successful), while also learning about the flow, pressure and power of water. They spend the day exploring different scientific aspects of water. They’re able to control and change the flow of water, see how objects respond to it and observe its force and energy.
2. The museum serves 1 million kids a year
This museum, inspired by the Denver Children’s Museum, had its grand opening in 1992. The president at the time of it’s opening, Kathryn L.E. Rabinow, continues to serve the museum in various ways, including as a Life Board Member.
The museum now serves over one million children and families every year, according to Museum attendance and community-based programs.
3. What to know about admission pricing
According to the museum’s website, your group must include a child age 12 and under to enter. Admission to the museum onsite is free for children under one, $21.95 for adults and children over one and $19.95 for ages 65+ and military.
These prices are $2 less when purchased in advance online.
4. Here are all of the ways to save on admission
Military and law enforcement and their families receive $2 off admission for up to six people. Texas Lone Star Card program members and SNAP benefit receivers can present their respective card and a photo ID to receive general free admission for up to 6 individuals.
Finally, ASTC Passport Program members receive free admission for the amount of people designated by their membership level. You can also become a museum member, which includes 12 months of unlimited access to 14 exhibits, several online activities, express entry on peak days and designated member events.
5. Here is information on their hours
The Children’s Museum of Houston is open every day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. every day of the week except Monday and Thursday. They’re closed on Mondays as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. As for Thursday, the museum is open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
